Best Taekwondo Shoes for Women Reviewed

Whether you are interested in martial arts as a form of fitness, a method of self-defense or a combat sport, the most popular styles require participants to invest in key pieces of gear. Martial arts have a history that spans four millennia. They originated as rudimentary fighting for survival and evolved into highly sophisticated methods of combat. These methods developed in an outdoor environment, either for use on the battlefield in mass warfare or for individual combat. In both cases, some sort of footwear was necessary. Therefore shoes have always been a staple in Chinese martial arts.

Karate and Taekwondo rely heavily on traditional strikes, such as punches, kicks, elbows, and a range of open hand techniques. However, the exact techniques and motivations behind each art vary. While being separate martial arts, both Karate and Taekwondo have similar requirements when it comes to gear. On the other hand, Karate and Taekwondo have largely been developed and practiced in an indoor environment where it is a cultural custom to remove one’s footwear when entering a household or training structure.

However, in throwing arts such as judo, jujitsu, and aikido, matted training areas are used. So outside footwear is removed to prevent dirt from ruining the mats, and also to protect them from damage, so they do not need replacing too often.

Why Wear Shoes When Practicing Martial Arts?

There are a number of reasons why you may want to wear shoes when practicing your art.

It is very common in areas where lots of people go barefoot, for skin and fungal infections to spread. For martial arts practitioners or trainers who train barefoot, this poses two potential problems. Firstly, if the student is respectful of his fellow classmates, he will not train while suffering from a skin condition. This, of course, is detrimental to the student’s training regime. The other potential problem is if the student ignores a skin health problem and trains anyway. This is not pleasant for the other students and the infection can then rapidly spread.

Some self-defense focused arts, such as Krav Maga, want to incorporate an element of realism into their training.  The thinking is that if you’re ever unfortunate to get into a physical confrontation on the street, you’re likely to be wearing shoes.   It’s, therefore, important to get used to moving and kicking with shoes on. Proper footwear will enhance your balance, timing, and speed. Indeed, regardless of your style, it would be worth incorporating training in shoes in order to get used to the different feel.

Most martial arts include sparring as an integral part of the training so that students can practice techniques against a real opponent. Some training shoes are elasticized slip-on type shoes, which incorporate thin padding across the top and instep. They can be helpful both to students when practicing during light sparring. They are also normally light-weight and thin enough that proper shin guards and foot padding can be worn over the top of them for more intense, full-contact sparring.

Not only because its tradition to do so, but because a good martial arts training shoe offers support and provides better balance. In addition, we do a lot of stretching exercises on the floor so it is unsanitary and disrespectful to wear everyday sneakers or street shoes to class. Similarly, it is unacceptable to train barefoot.

Choosing the Right Martial Arts Shoes

When it comes to buying a pair of the taekwondo shoes, then you have to think about what you actually want from them. There should be a few important questions that you should ask yourself before you buy one. The first thing to consider is your martial arts style.

Material – Most sparring moves involve striking with the top of the foot, which is why sparring boots are made with foam like material to provide cushioning for the feet and ankle joints, which the most commonly injured bones during martial arts exercise. Most of these shoes also extend over the top of the foot to provide ultimate protection.

Style – Some styles incorporate low, long stances where the feet glide across the floor during each step. If this is the case, you are likely to want a flat, smooth sole that’s not too grippy.  Otherwise, you’ll find yourself sticking to the floor particularly if you train on a wooden floor. In addition, if your style involves a round-house or mawashi Geri type kick, you should also consider a smoother sole. In this type of kick, the standing foot rotates as your kicking leg moves around from the side and snaps forward.

Structure – Most of the martial art moves involve kicking from the top of the foot. For this reason, Taekwondo shoes are made of cushioned material on the top of the shoe to protect your ankle and feet from getting injured during practice sessions. Often, these shoes are made from very good quality leather to offer the comfort and protection wanted from good footwear.

Size – Choosing the right size of shoes for Taekwondo is important as shoes that are too small can cause calluses, blisters, and corns. Similarly, too big shoes can also cause some of the same injuries. Also, if the shoes are not the right size, the feel and control of your movement will be affected.

Protection – The most important thing to remember is that the right pair of shoes, like the other martial arts accessories, are designed to protect you while you master your martial arts skills. Look for shoes that are well constructed, flexible, durable, and that fit you well and you will be ready to begin learning martial arts sparring moves, the safe way.

Color – It’s all about your personal preference. Taekwondo shoes are available in a few different colors. All of them are based in white or black, with a slight variation on the color of the striping or stitching. There are even Taekwondo shoes that have pink stitching. Men and women will definitely be able to find the colors they are looking for.

Why Can’t You Wear a Normal Pair of Shoes?

Realistically one of the main reasons for this is that it simply won’t be allowed by your instructor. Most martial arts require you to wear a uniform during your training sessions. Any shoes worn need to be keeping with this uniform. Most martial arts shoes come in either black or white and blend well with your Gi. A pair of trainers is unlikely to go down well with your Sensei.

Now that you understand how crucial it is to wear the right footwear when practicing your martial arts skills, finding the right shoes becomes a necessity. There are styles in fighting that required heavy kick that is why choosing the right shoes for your practice is very important. Here are the ten best Taekwondo shoes on the market that can be the best friend for your Taekwondo practice.
