Something everyone looks for in any sort of active gear is breathability. None of us enjoy the feeling of being hot and sweaty so we want our gear to do the best job it can assist to keep us dry. If you are already used to carrying a backpack or hydration pack you will know that quite quickly your back starts to become sweaty. The reason that this happens on most backpacks is that the materials they make the bag out of are usually synthetic and nonbreathable. These cause moisture build up between you and the back of your bag.

Camelbak has created what they call the Air Support Back Panel that is designed to maximize air tunnels between the bag and your back which in turn create more ventilation and more breathability. Even though these back panels up the breathability factor they still keep your bag close to your body so you don't lose stability.

If you are looking for a hydration pack you are most likely an active person, and active people need good quality products that will withstand everything they want their bodies to do. Whether it's hiking, training for a marathon, camping, or trail running this bag will go the distance with you. It's made of polyurethane-coated nylon which is known for its durability. This bag can take a pretty tough beating before you see any wear and tear on it.
With a hydration pack, you especially want it to be durable as you don't want your water source to be compromised or leak and since this bag can hold a lot of stuff you would need it to be reliable. Because of the price point of this bag its ideal that its heavy duty so you can save money in the long run instead of buying a new cheaper bag each year.

Practical Pockets

Having lots of pockets in a hiking bag is crucial to be able to find and store things easier. The Camelbak Fourteener 24 is made with this in mind, it has the main storage pocket that is great for larger supplies and items. The separate pocket for the hydration bladder which is necessary to keep it from being punctured or unsafe in any way. The dual wing belt which not only helps distribute weight but has stash pockets for little things like keys, money, or a protein bar. These are handy to reach as well and you won't have to take your whole pack off to access them.
There is a stretch overflow pocket that is handy for stashing an extra layer you took off because it got too hot or the rain cover for the bag in case it decides to drizzle unexpectedly. If you are someone who walks with a trekking pole this bag has a built-in holder for them so you can easily attach and detach them to use again. Last but not least the have provided a soft lined pocket for you to put any delicate valuables you have in it, sunglasses, phones, music players or any other electronics. They will be kept safe and unscratched but also easy to reach if you need them.

How much your bag weighs is important, too heavy and it's going to put extra strain on your back that's going to hurt or possibly injure you in the long run. Shopping for a hydration pack that's lightweight from the get-go is essential. The Camelbak Fourteener 24 when completely empty only weighs a total of 2 pounds. This is pretty lightweight, to begin with as you will be filling it full of water and supplies.
While this bag isn't specifically designed to be lightweight, it's not the heaviest bag on the market either. It’s a decently comfortable carrying weight depending on how much you fill it with.

The reason they make hydration packs is that you are planning to travel a long distance or be gone from a water source for a long time. Having a bag that doesn't fit you properly can cause rubbing and discomfort. In the long run, this will slow you down or just cause you to be not having a good time, which is the opposite of what you probably want. Thankfully the Camelbak Fourteener 24 is fully adjustable to your specific body. Almost every point on this hydration pack is adjustable.
The top straps have an adjustment point as well as the hip belt and the sternum strap. This provides maximum comfort for the wearer and makes sure it's not too tight but also not just slipping off your body. However, some reviews from customers said that the pack was likely too big for most females to use so that's something to keep in mind when purchasing this pack. Camelbak does make smaller pack specifically for someone with a smaller frame should you need to explore those options.

The experienced hiker or trail runner will know that control is one of the biggest things to take into account when buying a hydration pack. If you are traveling a long distance you will feel every bounce of your pack with every step that you take. It can add to how tiring the hike already is and that's the opposite of what you want your gear to do for you. Camelbak Fourteener 24 is designed to stay as close to your body as possible so it moves with it instead of against it.
Having your pack move around on your too much will tire you and your muscles out quicker because you will feel like you as fighting against it instead of it moving with you in unison.

Hiking and jogging can easily make you tired and dehydrated, especially carrying the extra weight from a pack on your back. Having a water bladder built into your pack provides you with the hydration you need to keep your body running without the weight of a water bottle of a canteen in your pack. This cuts down on weight which saves your energy from having a lighter load.

The bladder of the Camelbak Fourteener 24 can hold up to 3 liters of water and is designed to have a faster flow rate than other hydration bladders on the market. This is especially handy when you are mid-run and don't want to stop moving for long. The way a hydration bladder works is you fill-up the main compartment with water, tuck it into the designated pocket within the pack, pull the drinking tube through a hole they will have made, and then attach it to the clip on the outside of the bag. When wanting to drink out of it it's as easy as unclipping the hose and sucking on it, water will immediately start flowing with the suction you create with your mouth.

Easy Maintenance

Taking care of your supplies has never been easier. With this Camelbak Fourteener 24, you won't be heading home from camping or a long hike to find you still have to dedicate quite a bit of time to clean your bag off.

The bag itself is easy to keep clean, if you just got it lightly dirty just a wipe with a damp cloth or a little bit of soap on a cloth will do just fine. If you really get your bag dirty you can wash it in a bucket, bathtub or a deep sink, let the whole thing soak with soapy water and agitate it and it should come out just as clean as the day you bought it. If you don't like how much work the handwashing method sounds you can always throw it in the washing machine but just make sure you have it on a lower more delicate setting as well as a cold water setting. This will make sure your bag does not get harmed in the washing machine while the cycle is going. When it's done in the washing machine hang to dry or put in the dryer under a no heat setting.

Cleaning the bladder is just as easy as cleaning the pack, all you need to do is take it out of your pack and rise it with water or maybe a little soap if you feel it's getting smelly. If you think your bladder needs an ultra-deep clean because it is made out of silicone you can boil it for a minute or two to really kill any germs and bacteria that may be living in it.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the Camelbak Fourteener 24 is that it’s not waterproof. You can, however, purchase sprays to waterproof the outside if you wish to do so, or you can purchase a rain cover made for your bag. So whatever route you take to waterproof your bag it's good to keep in mind it doesn't come already waterproof. If you live in a warmer drier environment this shouldn't be a huge issue as it won't rain as much but if you live in anywhere damp in the world where it rains a lot this is something to be aware of.

When they designed this bag they really had the customer in mind. They made sure the load could be distributed between your body and not just your shoulders with the shoulder straps, sternum strap and hip straps that they provide. They made sure to add in breathable panels to the back to keep your back from getting too hot and sweaty which end up feeling uncomfortable during a long hike. Gave you carrying straps for trekking poles so if you don't want to be just holding them you can strap them away easily and provided many different styles of pockets to carry all your belongings in so you won't lose them or not be able to reach them easily.

While the Camelbak Fourteener 24 doesn't have many disadvantages is does have some. The main one being its lack of waterproofing, while this is annoying and inconvenient there are ways around it if you know you are going to get caught in the rain. You can either buy a waterproofing spray for your bag or purchase a rain cover made specifically to attach to it. So if the waterproofing was a huge game-changer you have options around it. The second disadvantage is one that's hard to remedy if you are of shorter stature you may have trouble with how big this bag is. Reviewers stated she was 5’8 and the bag at the smallest setting was still too big for her. Something to keep in mind when looking at purchasing it is that they also sell a small version of this bag designed for women.

Bottom Line

Looking through the reviews it's hard to find anything under 4 stars for this bag, we can see now why customers are loving it. It's durable and will stand up to anything rough you put it through. They have designed every part of this bag to make it easier for you to carry your supplies around as well as having the bladder for hydration. The only downsides are if you are too small for this bag or if you wanted something already waterproofed this may not be the hydration pack for you.
