The experts have been sounding off when it comes to Saturday’s pay-per-view clash between Gervonta “Tank” Davis and “King” Ryan Garcia. Here’s how some of them see the fight.
Shane Mosley (Former 3-division world champ)
“I’m leaning towards Garcia because he’s bigger, not because I believe he’s a better fighter technically
“I believe he’s bigger and he has the goods to be the bigger fighter. I think he can hit Tank with shots that he’s never been hit with, and I think the size, height, and speed is gonna be a problem.”– The Sporting News
Ronnie Shields (Current trainer of Jermall Charlo, among others)
“I’m excited for this one. They’re two of the very best in the lightweight division and I think it’s going to be a great fight. When you look at the styles, it’s just a perfect match.
“I think Garcia is the better boxer, so I see Tank backing up during the fight and trying to lure Ryan onto big shots. But in the later rounds, Tank is going to realize that he has to go forward, and I think that’s the key for him to win the fight.” – The Sporting News
Mike Tyson (Hall of Famer, Former 2-time heavyweight champion)
“Good fight. You gotta say Tank, but I think it’s gonna be a good fight.”
Vasiliy Lomachenko (Former 3-belt lightweight champion and 3-division world champion)
“I think Davis will win because he’s more aggressive and he’s always fighting with bigger guys…Ryan Garcia can only make one shot, his left hook, that’s it.” – FightHubTV
Roy Jones (Hall of Famer, Former 4-division world champion)
“Tank has a lot more tools than people think and Garcia is a much better fighter than people think.
“If Garcia can get comfortable boxing Tank and keeping him on the outside, then Garcia can win the fight.
“If he gets comfortable and relaxes and runs low on engine towards the end of the fight, Tank knows how to become and dog and start walking you down.
“If he gets to that point without too much damage, he can get to Garcia, so it’s a pick-em fight.” – iD Boxing
Devin Haney (Current unified, 4-belt lightweight champion)
“Ryan has the height, the speed, the length and all that, but Tank has that IQ, experience and power.
“The safe bet is Tank but you cannot sleep on Ryan, he definitely can punch, he’s shown that, so we gotta see.” – iD Boxing
Robert Garcia (Veteran trainer)
“Hector [Luis Garcia] landed some punches on Tank but I don’t think he has the power. I think Ryan has the f***ing power. I think if Ryan lands, he will hurt Tank.” – 210BoxingTv
Stephen “Breadman” Edwards (Current trainer of Caleb Plant)
“It’s a great fight, but I think it’s going to be more of a chess match than people realize
“It’s a very winnable fight for Ryan Garcia, make no mistake about it. Using the right game plan, he can win this fight because with Tank being a minimalist, he can use that against him and peck and poke his way to a decision without taking any chances. I just feel that at some point Davis will force him into a mistake and knock him out in the second half of the fight.” – The Sporting News
Josh Taylor (WBO junior welterweight champion)
“I see Tank winning that one. I just think better boxing brain, better boxing ability, more power, cuter in the way he moves and better boxing IQ.
“I don’t know about him stopping Garcia, I wouldn’t be surprised if he does but I’m going to maybe go for Tank on points.” – Boxing Social
Freddie Roach (Hall of Fame trainer)
“I think I might see an upset in this one. Davis is the puncher. But Garcia is a very good boxer, and a boxer versus a puncher matchup, you can’t ask for anything better. It should be a really good fight.
“Davis is a slow starter sometimes and it’s very important for Garcia to start early. Stand in there, use his height and box.
“I pick Garcia. He’s too fast and too strong.” – ProBoxTV News
Bob Arum (Hall of Fame promoter)
“I think Davis has too many tools for Garcia, but I could be wrong. Garcia has a great left hook and if he lands the left hook he can win the fight.” – Fighthype.com
